CONSIDER HEAVEN

by Pastor Don Thatcher

We live in a day when people can travel to destinations all around the world. People have set foot on the hot sands of deserts along the equator, as well as on the remote and frigid ice caps of the North and South Poles. For the most part, travel to destinations around the world no longer has to be done on foot, on a ship, or in a car — whereas in the past, it required several days, or even months, to get to such destinations. Practically any place in the world can be reached in a matter of hours simply by getting on an airplane. Why, we even live in a day when people have left our planet Earth, traveled into outer space, and set foot on the moon.

Travel and destinations seem to be an endless attraction for us. Making plans for our next holiday, dreaming of some exotic place to visit, or travelling to a destination where we have never been before, seems to captivate us. However, there are good reasons why many of us will never arrive at these travel dreams and destinations. The reasons could be attributed to finances, time, family, work, illness, and yes, even death.

Yet, with all the excitement and ease of world travel, millions of people are travelling through life’s journey without any thought of or preparation for their final destination. The Bible points out to us in Hebrews 9:27 that “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” In the sixteenth chapter of Luke’s Gospel, Jesus spoke of two men who arrived at their final destinations — one to heaven and the other to hell. The Bible tells us that the final destination of ALL

Let’s consider Heaven for a moment.

Heaven — it is a place where many people desire to go when they leave life here on this Earth. Though some would deny that such a place exists, the Bible is quite clear that heaven is a very real place. Matthew 7:21 tells us that heaven is the place where God is; and, it also points out that NOT In fact, the Scriptures also tell us of a place called hell where many will end up one day due to their unbelief in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus left the glory and splendour of heaven as God’s free gift to us, so that He might provide eternal life with God in this place called heaven (Revelation 20:10-15; John 3:16; Romans 6:23).

Heaven — it is a place into which one can be sure of entering after this life if proper preparation is made today (John 14:1-3, Acts 4:10-12, Romans 10:13, I John 5:13). A person does not have to wait until this life is over to be assured of a home in heaven. A person does not have to hope that he has done enough good to outweigh the bad (Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5). A person can live the days of his life here on earth with 100% assurance — an assurance based upon God’s Word — that he will one day be in this place called heaven. God, Who is righteous, holy, and just, has made a way for anyone, and for everyone, to know the reality of a permanent home in heaven one day (John 7:37-38, John 8:12, John 10:9, John 14:6, Titus 1:2, II Peter 3:9).

Heaven — it is a place beyond the trials and troubles of this life. In heaven there will be no more tears of sorrow for the hurt and hardships that come in this life here on earth. There will be no more tears shed for the heartache that comes with the loss of a loved one. There will be none of the pain or suffering that comes with the degenerative process of this old body. Heaven is a place where there is no more night — a place of no more darkness (Revelation 21:25 & 22:5). This place called heaven is a wonderful place because no sin will enter into it (Revelation 21:27 & 22:3). Imagine a place free from crime and wickedness, a place free from the hurt and deceitfulness of sin and Satan.

Heaven — it is a place of perfection. Revelation 22:1-5 describes it as a place of perfect satisfaction, perfect provision, perfect sinlessness, perfect government, perfect service, perfect communion, perfect possession, and perfect glory! Heaven is the place where Jesus is. He is busy preparing a place for those who trust HIM for salvation. This is the dwelling place of God (John 14:1-3). This place the Bible calls Heaven is a place of sweet peace and rest. It is a place where those who have trusted and obeyed what God’s Word the Bible proclaims will one day stand; and it is a place that they will be able to enjoy for all eternity.
