CREATION AND THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION: TWO WORLD VIEWS
by Mr. Greg Keating
Have you ever considered or asked yourself the following four great questions of life?
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
Where will I go when I die?
How you answer these four questions depends entirely upon your worldview. In other words, do you believe in the theory of Evolution, or do you believe in the Creation account that is detailed in the Holy Bible?
What you believe or do not believe affects your life in a very personal way. With this truth in mind, let us examine each one of these four great questions of life through the eyes and teachings of both the evolutionist and the creationist.
Who am I?
Evolution Worldview
If the theory of evolution be true, you and I are nothing but evolved animals, descended from ape-like creatures. This process of evolution, if true, would involve millions of years of mistakes, disease, bloodshed, death, and accidents. Or, to put it in Darwinian language, you and I are the end product of the stronger animals’ surviving and overcoming the weaker ones. In fact, as one biology textbook has put it, our skin colour and brain size are the results of natural selection through the process of evolution! That means, in case you did not catch it, that some people or races have evolved better or have become more intelligent than others. Charles Darwin did name his book The Origin of Species by Natural Selection The full title reads like this: The Origin of Species by Natural Selectionfor the Preservation of Favoured Races. It is well recognised by historians that Adolph Hitler and Karl Marx (the father of modern communism) based their philosophies and practices upon this book’s teachings.
Creation Worldview
If the creation account be true, you and I are equally made in the image of God. We are descendents of our first parents, Adam and Eve, who, before they rebelled against God their maker, lived in a perfect world with no death or diseases. We are therefore not animals, but the pinnacle of God’s creation. Having been made like God our Maker, we have the ability to create, design, build, appreciate beauty, and express or desire actions and feelings of love. However, because of our sin nature inherited from Adam and Eve, we are sinful creatures who face death and judgment. The Bible says in Romans 5:12
Where did I come from?
Evolution Worldview
If evolution be true, you and I came from a cosmic burp (Big Bang) that occurred about 15 billion years ago. Earth would have been formed about 5 billion years ago; and about 3 billion years ago, the first life form (a unicellular structure) would have appeared from a so-called chemical soup. Then, over millions of years of evolutionary changes, a fish would have evolved into an amphibian, which then would have turned into a reptile, which then would have turned into a mammal — and, finally, into man. All this, of course, would have happened by random chance, without any intelligent Designer, and without any purpose involved. In other words, you and I are here by chance: and that’s about it.
Creation Worldview
If creation be true, then God made the world and the rest of the universe about 6,000 years ago. He then took six days to fill and shape the earth with land, seas, animals, and, of course, man. The Bible clearly teaches that man appeared at the beginning of the world, and not over millions of years of evolution. In Mark 10:6, Jesus Christ was speaking and rebuking His listeners for not reading, and therefore not understanding, what the scriptures taught about the first man and woman. Here is what He said: from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Jesus taught from the already written scriptures this scientific fact: that man has always been man, and has never — indeed, can
Why am I here?
Evolution Worldview
If evolution be true, there is no purpose to life. You and I are just evolved animals trying to compete and survive in a survival-of-the-fittest arena. Remember, animals do not have morals: and we are just animals. In other words, if it feels good, do it! Evolution has no need, and therefore no time, for a moral or law imposed by God. Therefore, practices such as abortion, homosexual behaviour, adultery, divorce, and dishonesty are all okay, because every man decides for himself what is right or wrong (even though man, as an animal, should not even have an awareness or consciousness of what is “right” or “wrong”).
Creation Worldview
If the creation story in the Bible be true, then you do have purpose in life. This also means that you and I are accountable to an Almighty God, who has given rules and laws such as the Ten Commandments. Therefore, man’s purpose in life is to repent, know, obey, and serve God, who hates our sin, but loves the sinner. Without this relationship with God, man has no purpose in life, but rather experiences a “fish bowl” existence of meaninglessness. Though man lives in rebellion against God because of the sin nature passed down from Adam and Eve, he can have a real personal relationship with his Maker and God because of the sacrificial death of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, two thousand years ago. When men and women come to understand this truth and embrace it, they truly understand what real love is, and come to have true meaning in life. Romans 8:28 says, all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Where will I go when I die?
Evolution worldview
If evolution be true, then when you and I die, we just cease to exist (or, according to “new age” evolutionary schemes, we may get recycled as a plant or a worm). There is no hope beyond the grave: therefore, grab and achieve all that you can, and don’t worry or care about whom you might hurt or destroy along the way. Remember that according to the Darwinian “survival of the fittest” philosophy, we are just an evolved animal with no morals or purpose in life. It is worth noting that in all portraits of Charles Darwin, he is never seen smiling. He never seems to come across as one who had something to look forward to. Atheism, at best, feeds intellectual pride, but cannot offer real and lasting inner peace of the heart.
Creation Worldview
This worldview is very simple and to the point, yet sobering. When you and I die, we either end up in heaven with God, or in the eternal damnation of hell. The Bible says in Hebrews 9:27, judgment.” “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” This is what Christians call the “bad news.” This bad news is true, because God, who cannot lie, says so. There is, of course, also the “good news.” (The word “gospel” actually means “good news.”) The Bible says in John 3:16, whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Do you really think he is now saying, “No regrets”?
CONCLUSION
Though this article has not gone into any scientific arguments for or against these two worldviews, you must surely agree that what we believe or do not believe affects our lives in a very personal way. Having been asked these four great questions of life, how would you answer each one?
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
Where will I go when I die?
Jesus said:
“And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” ( 7:26-27).
